Over the past 60 years, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has developed 17 treatment protocols for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with the goal of finding the most effective and least toxic treatment. These protocols include preventive therapy, risk stratification, and a variety of treatments such as pharmacological agents and irradiation therapy. The application of these protocols has improved the cure rate of childhood ALL with relatively few adverse effects. St. Jude’s approach serves as a reminder of the importance of research in combating catastrophic diseases like ALL.
